Colchester sand dunes on the Sundays River near Port Elizabeth, South Africa

396

u/Magnaflorius 8d ago

It's so jarring to see people on sand dunes because that's super illegal where I live.

132

u/StcStasi 8d ago

interesting ... Illegal for what reason?

287

u/ConradSchu 8d ago

Increases dune erosion. A lot of dunes (along east coast US) are man made to combat coast line erosion.

154

u/EpicAura99 8d ago

Yeah climbing on dunes is generally only a problem on coastlines where their ecosystem helps keep erosion at bay. But with “naked” all-sand dunes, climb away. They’re not permanent features and move around anyway, you’re not hurting them. White Sands National Park straight up sells/rents sleds at the visitor center!

59

u/Odd_Contribution9058 8d ago

dont rent from them, though. its like 25/sled. there's a sport store 10 minutes away that sells them for 10 bucks each </cheap>

15

u/iloveuranus 8d ago

What do you do with the sled afterwards though?

50

u/Numahistory 8d ago

Sell it to someone else for $15

Walk up to the rental counter and hand it to the kid that is next in line while maintaining stoic eye contact with the employee at the counter.

That’s not at all what I remember the price being. We also got two for free from other people, and hey it’s a national park I’d rather give my money to them anyway.

In Oregon we ride ATVs on ours.

To be fair, the Florence dunes are huuuge. They were the inspiration for Frank Hebert when he was writing Dune. They regularly ‘walk’ over roads and even have swallowed whole towns.

Still pisses me off a bit when I see people doing donuts on them but I guess tourist dollars do help conservation so it’s somewhat okay.

5

u/GabaPrison 8d ago

Used to live in Medford and went to the Florence area every year to do that. Best memories I have. I just love the OR coast in general. Especially the smell. Now I live in Florida and it’s just not the same.

3

u/cloudshaper 7d ago

I can't think of Florence without thinking of the exploding whale.

2

u/aspidities_87 7d ago

It’s our state’s proudest tradition!

2

u/Childofglass 6d ago

We are encouraged to climb them in Michigan too- could definitely do this!

Erosion, and protection for the endangered species that live in the dunes.

41

u/LeDucky 8d ago

The sand people?

39

u/NebulaNinja 8d ago

Bunch of bollocks if you ask me. Everyone knows sand people always ride single file to hide their numbers. They're not as endangered as these so called scientists seem to think.

2

u/NotYourReddit18 8d ago

You can't keep calling them Sand people, that's racist. They are called Tuskens! /j

2

u/turbineslut 8d ago

Haha what’s this reference?

3

u/Bright_Cod_376 8d ago

Star wars. It gets noted because it is used to differentiate the tracks of sand people and stormtroopers.

Birds, mostly. Piping plovers. They live in the dunes and they're very adorable but very at risk.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/mattman0000 8d ago

They’ll soon be back. And in greater numbers.

13

u/copewithlifebyliving 8d ago

Near me its beacuse the dunes have a fragile ecosystem, and people going on them over the years has sped up erosion of the dunes. This caused massive amounts of land to be lost and become unstable and dangerous to be around.

u/Merppity 8d ago

I've tumbled down there there dunes my whole childhood, until we figured out.... Sleds! 🤣🤣

I think people can still do stuff like this on the dunes at the Outer Banks, NC (Kittyhawk). It’s also an area known for hang gliding and flying kites - and the Wright Brothers memorial, of course.

7

u/HAS-A-HUGE-PENIS 8d ago

Eh, depends on where you are. Some of the dunes there are heavily protected. Other places you can go four wheeling and what not on them.

3

u/FreddyTwasFingered 8d ago

My grandparents owned a townhome right beside Jockey’s Ridge/the sand dunes in Nags Head. I had many amazing summers as a kid on those dunes!

2

u/BasisRelative9479 8d ago

You can try. I have pictures of my children and grandchildren trying to slide down them. It never worked. They just always got stuck in the sand.

9

u/TehSakaarson 8d ago

RIP to the guy who died last week.

7

u/rileyjw90 8d ago

I don’t remember exactly where it was because I was a young child, but I remember visiting my grandmother in NC and going somewhere to ride dune buggies. I remember it being totally exhilarating, almost like being on a roller coaster with some of the steep drops there were.

Sounds like you need to rent a Sand Rail on Pismo Beach in CA. Yes, you might die. That's half the fun.

3

u/NedLuddIII 8d ago

Come to Colorado if you want to get your dune fix in. The Great Sand Dunes National Park will leave you hoping you never have to see another dune in your life. You lungs will hate you. Your legs will hate you. Assuming there's some wind, which there probably is, your skin will also hate you. You'll suddenly start having unreasonable sympathies towards Anakin Skywalker. 10/10, highly recommend

My 80 year old grandmother swims half way across a lake every day. This lady is probably fine. She's old, not decrepit.

44

u/opus3535 8d ago

she comes back the next day or what?

13

u/Lefty_22 8d ago

It's like an exercise thing? I don't time her. Maybe 30 minutes? We're not talking Lake Superior here.

47

u/MrZandin 8d ago

The joke is she only swims halfway. Means she'd half to swim the other half the next day.

You'd be surprised. I've seen ladies this age swim for a very long time during free swim time at the pool. They usually go breaststroke while keeping the head outside the water. It's slow, but without any current or waves, it does the job.

Mentioned this in response to another comment.

As a lazy person, this is the only way I've swam when not exercising/racing for the last ~25 years.

It doesn't take any more effort than treading water.

Always called it the "lazy breaststroke".

It's the best.

2

If you find yourself in Colorado, go to water world. Similar ride called the screaming mimi. It's soo fun and super dangerous. I highly doubt it will be there for many more years.

Basically you're on a wheeled cart on the track. Once you get to the water, you can skim across the top.

Some people eat shit right after the water.

Best ride in the park. Also a great spot to people watch as they biff it.
