Also depends on the industry. Civil construction equipment operators are usually more happy cause they’re not doing as much manual labor.
Sand and gravel mine equipment operators can be grouchy as fuck.
Snowcat operators, if you’re not worried about pay then they are definitely the most happy.

u/Impressive-Charge177 8d ago
Do you know how much an operator like this gets paid? This is my dream job but idk where to start
44
u/auggs 8d ago
I joined an operators union in my state. You take a few tests to get into the apprenticeship program a d they pay you while you work and take classes. I’ve been in like 8 or 9 different machines in the past year but the union hall will pay you to get licensed in any machine you want to run. The pay is great, health care is great and the pension is awesome. I know there are other operators unions in the USA. You should look it up.

u/JaguarZealousideal55 8d ago

I saw ‘scouted’ and thought you were going to say like the NBA draft or some shit.
Like imagine if top tier excavator operators got drafted like sports. No other job, specifically excavator operators. And it was like a big event in the industry every year. They would have scouts on construction sites, profiles on each person, stats, the works.
This guy would clearly be a first round pick.

I’ve never seen one move in such a human way before. Such finesse. As if the excavator is a mere glove worn by the precise, knowing hands of a master artist.
If you ever decide to find out their secrets and make an extended excavation training montage set to Eye of the Tiger/similar songs please do let me know

A skilled (non-union) HEO can make six figures once they master several pieces of equipment. I’m sure union operators make even more as the pay would be structured to increase as additional pieces of equipment are mastered. An experienced crane operator can make bank. It isn’t unheard of for union longshoremen to make $1000/day.

It is a shitty uphill climb honestly.
You don’t start at the top. Usually OTJ training with classroom work along the way. One of my tenants is doing it now and like most people he is starting at the bottom learning excavator/backhoe/Bobcat/lift truck. They sent him to classes for trenching and shoring and other OSHA mandated training. And next they are sending him to get a CDL so he can tow equipment around on a lowboy or use a dump truck. If you stick with it you can learn rigging and crane operations which can be more challenging since it involves some math and table lookups. Crane operators can earn good money after years of putting in time, but those jobs are coveted. But hey, maybe it is better than sitting behind a keyboard; only you can decide that.
Of course, it is better to do this through a union since the career path will be more defined, but in union jobs, seniority often trumps all.

Can't say much about the pay,as it'd vary depending on a country, but the operator definitely has quite a few years of experience. Anyone can operate an excavator but it'd take them 20 times longer to do things

They are extremely precise machines. Back in the day a colleague was showing off his skills and asked someone to half open a box of matches and put it on the ground. He then used his 20 tonne excavator to close the box without damaging it. It was quite impressive.

really depends on the equipment. I've definily seen ones where you have a 2nd guy on the ground to remove your pin retainer clip, beat the pin out of the hole, guide you onto the other bucket, set the pin and clip back in place.
EDIT: a word
8
u/JackRyan13 8d ago
It has an attachment called a quick hitch. It basically is a claw type attachment that is actuated hydraulically that allows fast implement changeover. Without our, you have to hammer out the bucket pins swap over to the new implement and hammer in the pins.
Some machines won’t use them cos they’re not required (ie will always forever have a mud bucket for example) but if you need to swap out the bucket even semi regularly they’re worth fitting.
