Informative Verify as professional

Recently, a post here was removed for being a homeowner post when the person was in fact a tradesman. To prevent this from happening, I encourage people to verify as a professional.

To do this, take a photo of one of your jobsites or construction related certifications with your reddit username visible somewhere in the photo. I am open to other suggestions as well; the only requirement is your reddit username in the photo and it has to be something construction-related that a homeowner typically wouldn't have. If its a certification card, please block out any personal identifying information.

Please upload to an image sharing site and send the link to us through "Message the Mods." Let us know what trade you are so I know what to put in the flair.

Let us know if you have any questions.

Structural Simpson Truss Screws vs H2.5A

Upvotes

Looking for opinions on Simpson truss screws vs h2.5a clips. They seem like a simpler and quicker solution. Asking for a project in Connecticut for those from here who have used them and passed inspection. Any gotchas?

Informative 🧠 IUOE Union on Court Probation

Would you be able to join the operators union on court probation? I’m on second chance probation and met with a guy about a very good union job. I’m just not sure if being on probation will hold me back or not? It’s not supervised so I won’t have to miss work to meet with an officer, I can travel freely no restrictions, only thing I have is a minimum of 3 drug tests during the 2 years.

Informative 🧠 Best hard hats?

I'm a plumbing student about 6 weeks away from going into the field. School provided me a shitty cheap Milwaukee hard hat that's not that breathable nor sturdy. Any one got any recommendations?

From what I've read online the "MSA 475407 Natural Tan Skullgard Hard Hat" is rated the best on pretty much every website. But I want some real opinions as to what I should get. Thanks

Structural Load Bearing?

I know it’s hard to say for certain, but polling the group.

The wall in question has floor joists in the basement running north to south with an LVL running through. The second level floor has the floor joists running east to west, with the top of the wall resting on the floor joist.

Any advise/tips/suggestions?

Careers 💵 Architectural Designer, Carpenter, or Design/Build?

To give some background, I'm 35 with a degree in Architectural Technologies and currently working as a BIM Manager for a commercial architectural firm in Florida. I make 85k and am able to do drafting, 3D rendering, real estate photography on the side for additional income, however I feel disconnected from construction in my FT job and just know that I love residential construction and want to learn/specialize in designing/building residential homes. Not sure if I want to build tract homes, custom homes, design/build or all three (or if that's even typical, or if there's more options than that) and am desperately trying to figure out if I should quit my current job to pursue a Carpentry Apprenticeship so I can learn the ropes to build houses from foundation to roof and possibly eventually open my own design/build firm combining all my skills. Questions I have are:

  1. Is the apprenticeship the best way/profession to learn this trade or should I try joining a Design/Build firm specializing in residential construction?
  2. Would a G.C. license after I top out at Journeyman be beneficial/necessary if I decide to start my own residential design/build business?
  3. Is a degree in Construction Management worth getting or would it better to get a Business Administration degree to learn the business aspects?
  4. I could have an opportunity to be an Architectural Designer at FT job, however even though it'd be commercially focused would this give me the same experience training in construction as a Carpenter?
  5. Are there better routes to pursue my dream of starting my own Design/Build business?

I do love building, working with wood, and working with hands/tools and everything I've researched says being a Carpenter kicks ass so maybe I'll love it, but obviously it's hard to give up the time/flexibility/and pay I currently have for an $18/hr physical labor job to start. Any advice would be appreciated!

Its so embarrassing. You think your jobs so cool you need your wife telling people about it. Or does she just LOVE you handling that hard pipe all day

Informative 🧠 Wiring up your own electrical as a homeowner

Post image
879 Upvotes

Has anybody had any issues wiring up their own service for a new build that is your own property, filing a permit as a home owner. I have a fair amount of electrical experience and lots of construction experience and am planning on building my own cabin in a rural neighborhood with electric at the road. I want to wire up my own service, and think I am legally able to, as a homeowner builder.

I will not be renting out the whole house when it’s done, maybe a room. The government says you can’t wire up your own house and rent it, but how could they track this info? And what could they do if they find you renting it partially?

Informative 🧠 Struggling with missed calls

I run a renovation business doing kitchen and bath renos and I struggle with missed calls, especially when I'm busy working on-site or after hours. I'm missing potential clients or opportunities because I can't afford to hire an assistant. I feel like I'm not the only one experiencing so. I'm trying to grow the business but it's really frustrating to do the work and then return calls.

So I thought I ask here what you guys have tried and implemented that worked in terms of managing your lead calling you?
